He was promoted to director in May of 2020 and became the university’s first assistant vice president of MARCOM in April 2024.

Salois served as the university’s Public Information Officer throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, increased earned media attention throughout the state and noticeably enhanced the school’s marketing and advertising efforts through numerous channels. Included in those marketing efforts were partnerships with InTrust Bank Arena, the Wichita Wind Surge, the Wichita Thunder and more than 40 regional organizations and events, including nearly 15 high schools and community colleges. Nonprofits were also an important part of the marketing plan, as Salois’ team launched support of the Love, Chloe Foundation, the Rolling Hills Zoo, the Smoky Hill Museum, the Smoky Hill River Festival and the Tri-Rivers Fair, all in the immediate Salina area.

All told, Salois and his team have earned 16 notable awards (14 national, two regional) since May of 2020, many of them fueled by the office’s shift to long-form storytelling, in the mold of The Athletic. He serves as the voice of the majority of KWU’s radio ads, as well as KWU’s Salina-focused ad in the winter of 2023. He and his team are responsible for the recent complete overhaul of KWU’s admissions materials, including the university’s first viewbook, programmatic brochures, and more, and also handle all of the university’s official social media outlets. Many of those outlets have engagement rates that, on a per-follower basis, are among the tops in the state.

Salois was also project manager on the development of the latest version of KWU.edu, launched October 2021.

Salois spent the majority of his career previously in athletic communications at the Virginia Military Institute, where he rose to the position of Associate Athletic Communications Director and worked with as many as 11 Division I sports at a time. He started numerous audio and social media ventures, led two website redesigns, wrote as many as 30 press releases a week and was a key player in broadcasting throughout his time at VMI. His publicity efforts included working with multiple MLB draft picks and track and field All-Americans, in addition to broadcasting games on multiple avenues, including ESPN3 and ESPN+.

Salois was named a juror for the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts (AIVA) awards during the summer of 2023, and was a member of the 2023-24 cohort of KICA’s Aspiring Campus Leadership Academy.

         Skylar
         Nelson

Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications

          skylar.nelson@kwu.edu

785-833-4377

Skylar Nelson ’21 returned to KWU on Aug. 11, 2025, following nearly 18 months at FILI Creative, a local multimedia production company run by Gus Applequist ’14.
